These are “singular” and acceptable when you don’t know who the person being discussed is, but they can be male or female. (There, I used the few of them in that sentence.) When I was 7 years old, I decided to tell the middle-aged postman that he should quit smoking because it was not good for him. The boy drove him crazy. I still vividly remember the look on his face, despite the Peanuts Snoopy as Joe Mailman shirt years that had passed. He really has smoke coming out of his ears!
